Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association History

The Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association was formed in 1988 following an expression of interest by the Monroe County Fireman's Association. The staff at the Strong Memorial Hospital Burn Unit was receptive to the idea and organizational needs were established. The Rochester Fire Department was then brought into the organization. Since then, the association has grown to include other elements of the fire services as well as members of the emergency medical services, the Shrines, and interested professionals from throughout the community (see attached list). All directors and officers, with the exception of a secretary who receives a monthly stipend, serve without compensation. Therefore, 95% of all monies raised by the association go to association projects. The remaining 5% go towards operational costs such as office supplies and printing. An endowment account has been established to assure a continuation of operations.

The mission of the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association shall be to significantly reduce the occurrences of burns and fires throughout the Finger Lakes Region of the state of New York. In addition, it shale be our mission to significantly contribute to the provision of quality burn care from initial treatment through long-term recovery throughout the Finger Lakes Region of the state of New York.

The initial goals established in 1988 still stands today. They are to present burn and fire prevention information to the community, to provide support to burn survivors, to support local burn care research, to support the regional burn center at Strong Memorial Hospital with equipment to enhance burn care, and to provide burn center staff with funding to attend educational events.

Fire and burn prevention efforts include networking with other organizations interested in addressing burn issues, participation ins community health events, and a strong association with local media to present burn prevention issues. Safety data sheets on a broad variety of subjects are also available. In addition to prevention materials and programs, the association works directly with local legislators on issues related to fire and burn prevention. The Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association is also actively involved with the American Burn Association and is regularly represented at national meetings and conferences.

Burn survivor support includes a summer camp for children burn survivors and an adult burn survivors support group. Both groups have grown substantially since their inception. The children's burn camp is a psycho-social experience for children with burn scars to enjoy activities that other kids their age enjoy, plus camp staff provide counseling to those having difficulty adjusting to their injury and the consequential scarring. The adult support group allows participants to discuss long-term common issues related to their burn injury.

Support to the local burn center includes donations of state-of-the-art equipment that allows the availability of dedicated equipment as opposed to shared equipment that may be in use on other units. Considering that most burn centers operate at a deficit, it also allows for the purchase of equipment in a timelier manner than budgets allow. In addition to donated equipment, the association provides training on burn scene management to the emergency services throughout the Finger Lakes Region.

Research is primarily the result of the attendance of local burn center staff at nation conferences where ideas on new treatment concepts are presented and discussed. This allows interested individuals to bring these ideas back to Rochester where they can be further explored. The Burn Association provides funding for attendance at the conferences.

Funding for association projects are provided by an annual Firefighters Burn Walk, an annual Firefighters Ski Race, an annual Emergency Services Gold Tournament, and United Way contributions.
