It is time for the annual FLRBA Adult Retreat
Friday evening February 3 to noon Sunday February 5, 2012
Ramada Inn at the head of Seneca Lake in Geneva, NY.

Get away for the weekend and connect with fellow burn survivors, family, and program providers. The weekend will take a look at some of JR’s highlights but specifically will focus on how we can take this message and work towards our successes and victories. Saturday evening is reserved for a social activity.

The retreat will be co-facilitated by Paul Schwartzman, FLRBA Executive Director and Psychotherapist, Kelly Reed-Plasse and Matt Klapetzky, who are both burn nurses and have developed and facilitated FLRBA youth and adult programs for several years, and Anne Marie Gefell, Burn Survivor.

Please arrive on Friday evening; we will meet for an informal dinner in the hotel restaurant around 6:45pm. Breakfast will begin at 8:30am Saturday morning with the program starting at 9:00am.

Group rates are $82 per night. FLRBA is picking up the cost of the room for one night for all attendees. All meals are provided.

Operation Patriot's "Mission 343" for injured Firefighters through the FLRBA

On Sept. 6, volunteers will place 343 flags at Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, NY, one for each firefighter who died at the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The flags will stand day and night through Sept. 11, each bearing the name of a firefighter who perished at the towers. This noble effort, dubbed "Mission: 343," is the work of Operation Patriot Fou ndation.

Mission: 34 3 is being organized by Mark Rossney and Operation Patriot Foundation, which was founded after the attacks and pays tribute to firefighters, law enforcement, first responders and active and retired military personnel. The nonprofit group raises money to support organizations that assist them, and it is offering $50 sponsorships for each flag to benefit the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association.

On Sunday, August 15th FLRBA Executive Director Paul Schwartzman was asked to attach a badge containing the name of a fallen firefighter from 9/11 to a flag, one of 343 being placed at Ontario Beach Park as part of M ission: 343, recognizing the sacrifices made on 9/11.
There is no better way to remember the sacrifice that they made on that day. Please find out how you can sponsor, and receive, one of the 343 American flags that will stand in tribute on September 11, 2011 to those how gave their lives at Ground Zero so that other might survive.

What a Great time!

This year our Campers spent a memorable day at the National Soaring Museum on Harris Hill in Elmira, NY.

Had lots of fun, thrills and excitement speeding around the Go-Kart track at the Harris Hill Amusement Park.

The Campers and Counselors even took to the sky with a wonderful ballooning experience with Richard Buckles and his 90,000 cubic foot hot air balloon, "Typnady".

2011 Burn Camp 3 Mile Walk & 10K Run June 12 at 9:00 a.m. Join the hundreds who will be walking or running in support of the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association's Summer Burn Camp for juvenile burn survivors. Enjoy this event's scenic route, from Camp Eastman in Durand Eastman Park, through the wooded neighborhoods of Irondequoit, NY, along Lake Ontario to finish at Seabreeze Amusement Park.

FLRBA has been supporting burn survivors since 1988, and we will continue to do so, with your help. Participating in this event will help send juvenile burn survivors to Summer Burn Camp. By also collecting pledges for the 2011 Burn Walk/Run you are helping to fund an important time in a young person's life. Fill out and submit a Pledge Card and help make a difference to our juvenile burn survivors.

Renowned American metal sculptor Albert Paley may be known as the Man of Steel but on May 7th in Rochester, New York, he’ll be known as something else: Survivor. On July 26, 2002, Paley, 30 feet in the air, was cutting a piece of metal with a blowtorch when a gas line burst engulfing him in flames. He was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with third degree burns over 30% of his body. I came close to dying and was put on life support. After a month in the Burn Unit and two operations for skin grafts I came home to begin the arduous process of physical therapy accompanied by several other minor surgeries. It was a long road to healing.
The experience was humbling and the journey life changing. It made Albert and his wife, Frances, realize the importance of helping the victims and families who have endured the painful physical and psychological suffering of burn injury treatment. On May 7th, from 7 to 9pm, Albert and Frances will open the new studio (an area the size of an airplane hangar filled with steel, machinery, art and creative energy) for the Inaugural Finger Lakes Region Gateway to Healing Art Showcase and Auction, an event benefiting the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association, an independent not-for profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of burn related issues and helping burn survivors and their families medically, financially and psychologically.The event will highlight Paley’s work and creative process. He and Frances will be on hand to speak of their experience and the importance of supporting the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association. We invite you to attend this special event. It will be a night of art, inspiration, hope and healing.

Youth Burn Camp survivors spend the night at the Rochester International Airport on purpose – February 11, 2011

Many thanks to FLRBA Board of Director and Vice-President of Norcross Aviation Chris Di Chario and Sam Cooper, Public Relations Director of the Greater Rochester International Airport for hosting a sleepover at the airport. The event provided an opportunity for summer burn camp youth to reunite and have some fun. Activities at the event included greeting an arriving flight, meeting the pilots and getting a tour of the aircraft. Volunteers from Pet-Assisted Therapy brought their service dogs to demonstrate their skills and share their affection. The Rochester Fire Department Axemen, Wegmans, Romeo’s Restaurant and FLRBA Directors and volunteers Matt & Wibke Klapetzky and Greg Merrick helped provide food, face painting, transportation and supervision.

The Annual FLRBA Adult Burn Survivor Weekend Retreat - February 4-6, 2011

This year’s theme was Connections with the goals of providing a getaway weekend to connect with old friends and make some new ones; learn about connecting our mind and body to address stress, trauma and move towards healing and wellness; and connecting dollars and sense with a discussion on short and long term financial health. Dr. Danielle Fraenkel of LivingDance and Director of Kinections, Inc. provided a seminar on how movement helps the brain find balance and insight. Andrew Bartholomew, a Certified Financial Planner, facilitated the discussion on financial health. Both Danielle and Andrew are well respected in their fields and both are burn survivors. Saturday evening provided a social opportunity and live music provided by singer/songwriter Connie Deming.

The overall retreat was co-facilitated by Paul Schwartzman, FLRBA Executive Director and Psychotherapist, Kelly Reed-Plasse and Matt Klapetzky, who are both burn nurses and have developed and facilitated FLRBA youth and adult programs for several years.

Holiday Party at Rock Ventures – December 11, 2010

Youth burn survivors and their families gather to celebrate the holidays at Rock Ventures for the 2^nd Annual FLRBA Youth Holiday Gathering. With the assistance of the Rochester Firefighters, the Axemen and Red Knights (firefighters who are motorcycle enthusiast and very devoted to FLRBA), the Pirate Toy Fund, Wegmans and FLRBA volunteers, a grand time was had by all. The Axemen and Red Knights are trained by the Rock Ventures staff to work as belayers and really help everyone climb to new heights. Santa made a surprise visit and gave all the children gifts.

Road Rally & Chicken BBQ Benefit

This wonderful event takes place Sunday, October 17, 2010. The Road Rally starts at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Exempts, 690 Thomas Ave. Chicken BBQ starts at 12:30 p.m. (reservations requested). You don't have to participate in the Road Rally to enjoy great chicken from Charlie's Chicken for just $10.00.

Chelsea was burned 14 years ago when she was just 3 years old and has been attending FLRBA Burn Camp since that time. Thanks to all who helped make this year's Event a great success. Although the weather was not the best, our Walkers and Runners put their best feet forward for "Juvenile Burn Survivors" and Summer Burn Camp and made the day the best so far. Close to $10,000 was raised in support of Summer Burn Camp this year and everyone at FLRBA want to thank all our volunteers and all those who donated their time, services and materials to this cause.
