Burn Camp

A decade ago, the University of Rochester Medical Center Burn Unit and Strong Memorial Hospital in conjunction with Camp Good days and Special Times Inc., and the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association initiated the first summer session of Burn Camp. The camp provides burn survivors with a very special place to spend part of their summer vacation.

Summer camp has long been seen as an extremely positive and beneficial experience for any child. For burn survivors, camp offers the opportunity to have fun while they share their feelings and experiences with other children who are in similar circumstances.

The 4-day long overnight camp is held annually, at the end of August. In the past, burn camp has been held at such exotic locations as, the Camp Good Days facility on Silver Lake , New York , Camp Asbury in Perry , New York and for the last few years, camp has been held at The Watson Homestead in Painted Post, New York . Each year Children between the ages of 6 to 16 who have been treated for a burn injury throughout New York State and Ontario , Canada are invited to participate. The cost of the camp has been entirely underwritten so that there is no cost to the children or their families.

Some activities that the children will enjoy include: arts and crafts, sports, games, aquatic activities as well as activities that encourage self-expression and an opportunity to assist in creating a new and positive self-image. The camp is staffed by nurses, social workers, adult burn survivors and firefighters, as well as other health care professionals.

The Burn Camp has been successful with the help of volunteers and a dedicated burn care staff.
